AI Search Visibility: Check What AI Says About You

Published by Sagar Samy • October 15, 2026

Try this before your next coffee gets cold. Type your business name into Google on a signed-out device, and read the first real answer on the page. It probably is not your website. It is a short paragraph Google’s AI assembled about you from your site and your listings, and it may be all a ready-to-buy customer reads before calling. When I run this check on my own business and for clients, the broad strokes are usually right, and the details that drift, an old opening time, a service I no longer offer, a stale price, are the ones that cost enquiries. This is the monthly routine I use to catch them.

AI search visibility: why your business name search has changed

For years, your website sat at the top of your own name search, and anyone typing it already wanted you. AI Overviews have changed the reading order: Google now summarises your business before the visitor reaches a single link, and assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude answer recommendation questions in your category. Two independent trackers, DemandSphere and Ahrefs, now put AI Overviews on over 80% of major-brand searches, and Semrush’s AI Overview study lays both datasets side by side.

One limit matters: both trackers counted appearances, whether an overview showed up on the results page. Neither measured whether the business was named inside the answer, nor clicks gained or lost. The figure tells you the summary exists; what it says about you is a question your own checking answers.

Tracker What it counted Start End of September Source
DemandSphere Branded queries showing an AI Overview, all markets and devices 26.12% on 1 Sep 82.06% on 29 Sep, peaking at 90.48% on 27 Sep Semrush’s AI Overview study
Ahrefs Branded keywords showing an AI Overview, US desktop results only 65.1% in August 82.91% on 29 Sep Ahrefs’ branded search study

The trackers disagree about the size of the climb, because Ahrefs watched US desktop results from a higher base, but they agree on where it landed: assume the summary is there, and make sure it is accurate.

How to run a monthly AI visibility audit for your business

Once a month, set a short session aside and run these four passes in order. Keep the notes in one dated document, so you can see what changed since the last check.

Search your own business name the way a stranger would

Sign out of Google, or open a private window, and search your business name exactly as a customer would type it. Read the AI Overview the way a stranger would, and write down every claim it makes about you: services, opening hours, prices, the area you serve, and what kind of business it thinks you are. Then run the wider search, your service plus your town, and note whether you appear in that answer, and which competitors it names instead.

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude about your business directly

Open the assistants your customers use, and ask each: what do you know about this business, using your name, and who would you recommend for your service in your area. Listen for whether you get mentioned, how you are described, and every error, because an assistant that states your opening hours wrongly is repeating something it read somewhere, and that somewhere can be found and fixed.

Fix the error at the source, not in the answer

There is no edit button on an AI answer, so every fix happens upstream, in the pages and profiles it was assembled from.

Start with your own website: service pages that name each offering and carry current prices give the AI clean material to work from, the same discipline I follow in what AI really costs a small business, where nothing is left vague for any reader to misread. Next, your Google Business Profile, whose hours, services, and categories should match the website exactly. Then the directory sites, where an old address or phone number can survive for years and keep feeding answers. Fix the source, note the date, and recheck at next month’s audit.

Watch your branded searches in Google Search Console

Google Search Console (GSC) shows the effect over time. Filter the Performance report to searches including your business name, and follow the click-through rate (CTR) week by week. Rankings that hold steady while CTR softens are the fingerprint of an answer above your result doing the talking, and a CTR that steadies after a source fix is the closest thing this channel offers to a receipt.

ChatGPT ads: watch the test, prepare your house

AI answers are also becoming advertising space. OpenAI has announced a first test of visual ads inside ChatGPT, starting in the United States later in October, shown while people generate images, clearly labelled and kept separate from the image, and limited to an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI has not published who qualifies or what the format costs, so there is nothing sensible for a small business to buy yet, and ghacks’ report on the ChatGPT ads test covers what little has been confirmed. The useful response is preparation: product images that are current and honestly described, service pages that state what you sell, and a business profile that matches both. If your images come from AI tools, the selection and disclosure habits in my AI video ads buyer’s guide matter even more once generated images sit beside sponsored placements.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is how accurately and how prominently AI-generated answers describe your business when customers ask about you by name or look for what you sell. It covers Google’s AI Overviews and answers from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, and it is shaped by its sources: your website, your Google Business Profile, and your directory listings.

How often do AI Overviews appear when someone searches a business name?

In DemandSphere’s tracking, AI Overviews appeared on 82.06% of branded queries at the end of September, up from 26.12% at the start of that month, and Ahrefs measured 82.91% on US desktop results on the same date. They count how often an overview appeared, not whether the business was named inside it or how many clicks changed.

How do I check what AI says about my business?

Search your business name in Google while signed out and read the AI Overview as a customer, then ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude what they know about your business and who they recommend in your category. Write down every error in your hours, services, prices, or description, fix each one at its source, and repeat the check monthly.

Can I correct what ChatGPT or Google’s AI says about my business?

You cannot edit an AI answer directly, because it is generated fresh from the sources the system can read. You correct it by fixing those sources: your website’s service pages, your Google Business Profile, and old directory listings, and the answers follow once those sources are re-read.

Should my business advertise in ChatGPT now?

For most small businesses, the right move is to watch and prepare, because the visual ads are entering a limited United States test with an initial group of advertisers, shown during image generation, and OpenAI has not published eligibility or pricing for the format. Preparing means keeping your product images, prices, and service pages current, which improves the answers AI gives about you meanwhile.
