I use AI every single day in client work. Drafts, variations, research, first passes at captions, rough cuts of ideas. And I am telling you plainly: the people using AI as a replacement for thinking are producing content nobody remembers, while the people using it as leverage are producing more good work than ever. The difference is the pipeline. Here is mine.
AI drafts, humans decide
This is the entire philosophy in four words. AI is extraordinary at volume and terrible at judgment. It can give me twenty headline options in ten seconds, but it cannot tell me which one my client’s audience will actually feel. So I let it do what it is good at and keep a firm grip on what it is not. Every AI output passes through human taste before it ever reaches an audience.
Where AI actually earns its place
Be specific about the jobs you hand over. In my workflow, AI handles: first drafts of routine copy, variations on a proven winner, research summaries, transcribing and repurposing long content into short pieces, and beating the blank page. It does NOT handle: final voice, strategic calls, anything requiring real experience, or anything I would be embarrassed to defend as my own.
The taste bottleneck
Here is the uncomfortable truth about AI pipelines: they do not remove the bottleneck, they move it. When production gets cheap, judgment becomes the scarce resource. The winners are not the people generating the most content. They are the people with the sharpest taste doing the final pass. I spend more time editing AI output than I ever spent writing from scratch, and the results are better for it.
Keep a human fingerprint on everything
Every piece that goes out under my name or a client’s name gets something AI cannot fake: a real opinion, a real story, a specific detail from actual experience. That is the soul part. Readers can sense generated mush the way they can sense reheated food. One genuine sentence outperforms ten polished generic ones. I never publish anything I could not defend in a conversation.
Build the pipeline, then guard the standards
A working AI pipeline looks like this: human sets the strategy and the angle, AI produces volume and variations, human selects and refines, human adds the irreplaceable bits, human approves. Document it. Then the real work begins: holding the line when deadlines tempt you to skip the human steps. The pipeline only works if the standards are non-negotiable.
Scale the output, not the shortcuts
Used right, AI lets a small team produce like a big one. That is the genuine prize. But scale amplifies whatever you feed it: scale good judgment and you get excellence at volume; scale laziness and you get noise at volume. The tool was never the strategy. Your taste was always the strategy. AI just made it more valuable.
